Calving season is well under way.  So far the count is split evenly, 15 heifers, and 15 bulls.  The good news is that of the 8 calves out of Rita 6V18, seven have been heifers.  Well, we're over the hump. Only 25 more to go!

Even though January brought record colds to New Jersey, we've gotten along pretty well.  We set up some calving pens in the old dairy barn, which worked out good on those nights where the temperature dipped below zero.  It sure made it easier on me, when I had to go out for the 2am check.  The only close call was a first calf heifer who jumped the gun on me a little, dropped her calf outside, and left it.  I found it an hour later half frozen.  The temperature didn't even register on the thermometer, and after unsuccessfully trying to rub it down,  I quickly brought it in the house and warmed it up in the bathtub.  We had to tube it for two days till it got its strength back, and then we were able to graft it back onto its mother.  Now why didn't she just take care of it in the first place?  Besides that, there was one calf backwards and one upside down that needed some assistance.  Other than that things have been pretty uneventful.

Even though the calves are still young, you can already see some differences.  The calves by 9150 and Future Direction come easily, as would be expected.  The calves by DCC Rito Prime have a lot of bone and promise to have good thickness.  The calves by Hyline Right Time 338 are exiting, too.  They promise to have some go to them.  Too bad they have all been bulls.  I was a little concerned his birth weight would be higher than his EPD's indicated, but so far he is breeding true to his numbers.

If you're ever in the area and would like to see them for yourself, give us a call!
